We did not Q, but I just wanted to see where Lexi's level of training was.

Awesome things about our run:

GREAT start line stay

Came back to me after visiting the bar setter

Beautiful dog walk contacts

Came back after her zoomie laps

SHE HAD SO MUCH FUN

I know it wasn't what most people would consider the perfect run, but I am so thrilled with my baby dog. She showed me she has GREAT foundation. She had a blast, had good speed, and was HAPPY! When we are able to focus the crazy, she will be absolutely rocking awesome! Yay baby dogs!!!!
And yes, I know there is a typo in the credits, it was just too much of a pain to try fixing it. :) Enjoy!Rachel Tennant, DVM, MShttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06646235629442480095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9192809934289782128.post-21108289888646988622012-03-20T20:44:00.000-07:002012-03-20T21:05:35.657-07:00MCDF Trial, February 24-27, Albany, OR

This turned out to be a great trial for us, as are all the trials that we do close to home. Because this venue is about 45 minutes from my house we entered all four days.

Friday

Our judges for the weekend were Howard Etzel and Carla Boudrot. We hadn't run under either one before.

Unfortunately I have misplaced the maps for Friday, and didn't have any video. The results were an NQ in Standard but a Q and 6th place (11 MACH points) in JWW. If I find the maps I will post them at a later date! :)

Saturday
Saturday morning started out with the announcements. Because we had not QQ'd on Friday, I was totally not expecting anything for the High in Trial awards. I was floored when we took HIT working group on our jumpers run alone. Mind you, it was an AWESOME jumpers run, but there were lots of fabulous dogs there. The problem was the standard course was not good for a lot of dogs, thereby handing us our fourth ever HIT. Way cool!
Looked like a fairly decent course, turned into a train wreck. :) I sent HP into the tunnel for the start, then moved into a landing side FC on jump #2. Over the dogwalk and he sighted in on that darn tunnel. I was able to call him off it, and over on to the table, but in his excitement he blew his down contact on the dog walk. Darn it! He only blows down contacts when the next obstacle looks like it's the tunnel! Shoot. Oh well. On to the table (with a FC), then in to the tunnel. Nailed the weaves, as well as the 360 at 7/8/9. No probs at the teeter or the panel. My plan was to FC and call HP to the A-frame, and I pulled too hard. He ran next to me, PAST the A-frame, then took an off-course tire when I tried to call him back around. Bleh, bad handler! The rest was rather uneventful, with a RC between 13/14, and a push out over the last jump. NQ. :( I don't feel too bad though, as the Q rate for this course for the 24 inch dogs was 12%! Ouch!
Tricky little twisty course for jumpers. For this one I started on the left, FC between 3/4, FC between 6/7, over the 180 and into the tunnel. Nailed the weaves again, pushed him out to take 13 while I got in another FC between 14/15, and a push out at the last jump that he read really well. I was very pleased. Q and 6 MACH points, which I consider pretty good since this course was what I call a "border collie" course. Lots of twisting and turning, hard for the big dogs to open up and really RUN.
Another tough standard course, which seemed to be the theme for the weekend. The plan was to start on the left and stay there through the A-frame, rear cross between 5/6, front cross between 9 and the table, front cross between 11/12 (almost a disaster, I got in his way, probably should have rear crossed that one!), another fc between 15 and the tire, then treat 17/18/19 as a serpentine (send him over 17, pull him back over 18, then send him on to 19 with a RC between 18/19). Bad handler forgot where she was going after 18! Thank god my boy is such a good worker, he was able to recover without earning a refusal for a Q for this run. Q, 3rd place, and 12 MACH points! We rarely ever place so I was very stoked about this run!
Now THIS course looked like fun! Like Friday's JWW course, it was wide and open, letting the big dogs really RUN. HP loved this course! I started out on the left, did an RC when he was in the tunnel (#6), then it was a flat out run down the back. HP read my push out to #9 very well, allowing me to get in an FC between 10/11. Another short straight to the weaves (the off course #6 was a worry, but he handled it well), then another straight line (14/15/16), RC between 16/17, and down the home stretch. Q and 9th place, 11 MACH points! Woo! Fast and fun!
Probably the best standard course of the weekend. The 180 at the start I handled with a landing side front cross at 2. Around in a smooth loop (avoiding the off course table at #10), over the dog walk, tunnel, jump and on the table. Nailed the weaves, around in another smooth loop, rear cross between 15/16, which HP read very well, then around to the finish. Q, 4th place, and 14 MACH points!
Lovely, fun jumpers course. I had great hopes of grabbing another QQ for the weekend. It was not to be though. Started with a nice line 1-3, FC between 3/4, then a knocked bar at 6. :( It was the end of a very long weekend though, so we finished up, the only other side change being a rear cross between 17/18. NQ. Oh well, still very proud of my boy and a wonderful weekend!
This was our most tight course of the weekend. There were lots of choices in the center of the ring for the dogs. Our plan was to start on the right, with a front cross between 2/3, on to the teeter, quick 180 off the teeter to 5/6 (while avoiding the off course #12 triple, which trapped a lot of dogs). Chute to table, then around to a straight line of jumps to the weaves. I walked it several ways, with a front cross between 10/11, a rear cross between 11/12, a rear cross before the weaves, and a front cross after the weaves. Unfortunately, EVEN THOUGH I KNEW BETTER, I chose to do a rear cross at the weaves. Stupid me, I know HP will do rear crosses at the weaves in practice, but won't do them in competition. Stupid handler! Of course we got a refusal on that, NQ'ing our run. We continued on over the dog walk, with a turn command into the tunnel, over the double, right side of the next tunnel, then a run over the a-frame to the finish. Because we were NQ'd already I just ran for the finish and he blew his a-frame contact. Not that it mattered at that point. :( Oh well, next run!
Nice flowing jumpers course with LOTS of rear crosses. The way we ran this one was starting on the left, rear cross between 3/4, between 5/6, between 12/13, then a front cross after the weaves and run for the finish! Fun course! Q'd and earned 6 MACH points!

I was feeling pretty good about Rally today. Lexi and I had managed to Q the previous day so I figured we'd try again. Well, it was not to be. Lexi was actually much better, giving me more attention and less boxer antics. The judge we had didn't seem all that entertained though. We lost a lot of points through healing, then we got two 10 point deductions as well, one was on the down/walk around, where Lexi came up off her elbows (in hindsight, I should have re-done that one), and the other was station 4, which was a come front, finish right. I have no idea what we did wrong, and the judge couldn't remember, so that was an NQ for the day. Lexi was getting a little stressed by the last station, and avoiding a sit a little bit, so I'm not sure if we'll do more Rally or not. We'll have to wait and see.

So agility totals:

Totals for the day: 1 Q, 6 MACH points

Totals for the weekend: 2 STD Qs, 2 JWW Qs (4 Q's total, 1 QQ), 48 MACH points.

MACH totals so far: 7 QQs and 306 MACH points!

Rally totals for the weekend:

1 Rally Q for Harry Potter, and 1 Rally Q for Lexi

All in all a very successful Rose City Classic weekend!
No agility because we didn't get in. :( We arrived early, watched breed, then got ready for Rally.

Wow, the obedience stewards were NOT very nice. They wouldn't give out maps, they didn't want to let me move my dogs (They were set up to run one right after the other), and they were NOT being nice about agility conflicts. Geez people, lighten up a little bit.

Harry Potter
Harry Potter had a better rally run than yesterday. He was much more responsive, payed attention more, and in general would have had a better score than the previous day. Well, we would have if I had not missed a sign. For some reason, I walked right past sign #11, NQ'ing our run. Oh well, better luck next time.

Lexi
This was Lexi's first time ever in the ring. For anything. My only goal with Lexi was to go have fun and assess her ability to
work in the ring (I wasn't setting lofty goals for a 22 month old). Oh
my god....we actually Q'd....and in true boxer style. It was
hysterical. She was entertaining as only a boxer can be. She stood up
on her hind legs a few times to check
out the people over the curtain, she boxer pounced the fence between the
rings with both front feet, had some really high flip
finishes.......when we left the ring people were laughing hysterically
and applauding! I thought for sure we had NQ'd but nope.....we got a
70...and our first RN leg! The judge said it was the most creative
interpretation of the course she'd seen in a long time! Too bad I
didn't get video!
We arrived around 7:30am and spent some time hanging out until our first agility run. We went around to all the vendors, and I tried very hard not to spend money. :) I was mostly successful! I did buy a Boxer pin to use to hold my exhibitor numbers at agility trials.

I successfully avoided some very nice boxer stained glass and boxer prints. It was tough though!

Lexi got to play the perfect boxer ambassador today. There was a HUGE group of kids coming through the show, all about 8-12. She waded right in the middle and was hugging and giving kisses to about 20 children. They LOVED her. She's such an awesome girl.

Excellent B Standard

Beautiful course, open, flowing, perfectly planned for an awesome run!

Our plan for this one was to start on the left of 1, over the dog walk, pull around 3/4 and over the A-frame, rear cross at the chute. Over 7 and to the table, then front cross before the tire, over the double, then jump 13 and the left side of that tunnel. Over 15, teeter and a fast straight run into the right side of the tunnel then a straight finish. Harry Potter was on fire! He was running FAST. Our only minor trouble spot was 13 into the tunnel. I over worked it, calling his name when he was headed for the correct entrance, I almost caused a refusal! We didn't get called and finished with a Q and 18 MACH points. It was our fasted qualifying YPS in Standard ever! Yay HP!

Rally Novice A
On a lark, I decided to enter some Rally classes this weekend. I figured since it was all in the same building, why not? Turns out, we need WAY more work on our Rally (we haven't had rally classes in about a year, and other than some doodling around the house, we don't do much heel work cause I suck at it!) We have never done any Rally competitions!

WORST....MAP.....EVER! *snort*

Wow was HP distracted. We started out pretty good through the first couple stations, but then it all went downhill. He wanted to sniff the floor, his sits were far from straight, and he kept getting distracted by the people and dogs sitting around the ring. He was also ignoring me and doing quite a bit of forging. Gah! We managed to get through it, but I was sure we hadn't qualified. Turns out I was wrong, we did get an 81. While it wasn't the worst score in the class, we definitely didn't place. Oh well, lets me know what we need to work on, eh?

Excellent B Jumpers with Weaves

Another lovely course, fast and fun.

At first I thought I would try a front cross between 2/3, but then figured I'd be in his way. I started this on the left, and used a turn command at 4 with a rear cross. Another rear between 6/7, a front between the weaves and 10, and fairly straightforward run like heck to the end. Unfortunately, I sprinted past 12 and 13, and in HP's effort to speed up, he knocked bar 13. Dumb handler! The rest of the run was lovely, but still an NQ.

Totals for the day: 1 Q, 18 MACH points.

MACH totals so far: 7 QQs and 300 MACH points!

And so our day ends like this:

No agility tomorrow, as I didn't get in. :( Sad! Guess it's all rally, all the time. Both Lexi and HP are entered in Rally Novice A. More agility on Sunday!Rachel Tennant, DVM, MShttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06646235629442480095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9192809934289782128.post-60510080713831177812012-01-19T21:56:00.000-08:002012-01-23T19:48:35.895-08:00Rose City Classic, Portland, OR, 1/19/12 - Day 1This weekend we're in Portland for the Rose City Classic, or RCC. It is a huge show, with conformation, agility, and obedience, all indoors at the Portland Expo Center. Rarely do we ever have indoor shows in this area, and this one gets a lot of public attention, so it's fun to show off your breed.

We arrived early, about 6:30, and had to unload in a torrential downpour. It's the Northwest, I rarely ever mind our "normal" rain, and shrug it off like most people. But the rain today was HORRIBLE. So much more than we usually get, we are actually having flooding in some low lying areas. Probably some of the worst rain I've seen since moving out here 10 years ago, but I digress.

Another aside, quick apology to those that follow my blog on a regular basis, I have been awful about blogging lately, skipping 1 show in November, 1 in December, and 1 in January. Sorry!

So after several trips in the downpour, I got everything inside. We were set up in between the obedience and agility area. I tried to find my friend Kennedy's set up, but didn't have any luck, so we just grabbed our own space.

The plan for the weekend is as follows:
Thursday - Harry Potter is entered in agility, both Standard and JWW
Friday - Harry Potter is entered in agility, both Standard and JWW, and he is also entered in Rally Novice
Saturday - Harry Potter and Lexi are both entered in Rally Novice
Sunday - Harry Potter is entered in agility, both Standard and JWW, Lexi is entered in Rally Novice

Whew! Crazy! We are not doing agility on Saturday because we didn't get in, so I figured we'd toss in some Rally. At this show obedience and agility are very close together, making it easier to manage entries in both. And yes, I entered the baby dog! I know, am I insane?? I haven't done Rally in over a year, and never in competition! We'll see how it goes. I'm expecting Harry Potter to at least pick up a leg or two, with Lexi, I just want some attention and good work attitude, I am not expecting qualifying scores. If we get them, awesome. If not, oh well. :) She's only 22 months, so I need to be realistic and just try to set her up for a good ring experience!

Excellent B Standard
So today was an all agility day. Our first course was Excellent Standard with David Hirsch. Can I just say how much I LOVE his courses? So big dog friendly. He always puts in a few tricks, but overall is very fair and really pleasant to run under.

While walking this, there were only a few places that were a little tricky. The plan was in to the tunnel, front cross between 2/3, then be sure not to push out too hard at the 180 (3/4). There was a real chance that you would get that off course jump with the big dogs. Rear cross between 4/5 to the table, around the loop (7/8/9/10/11/12), into the weaves, panel, tunnel, dogwalk. There was the potential to miss the #12 if you pulled in too tight after the dogwalk, so I ran it out a few steps then pivoted for #12. Then a fairly straight line to the finish after the push out to the triple.

HP performed well, on the 3/4 180 I ended up calling his name and he came in nicely. After the number 12 jump, he looked at the off-course option but another name call worked well and we finished with a nice Q. MX2 leg #6 and 17 MACH points!
Excellent B Jumpers with Weaves
Next up is jumpers. Judge is Tim Pinneri. We were lucky this weekend to have two great judges that are very big dog friendly.

Fun course! I walked this course several different ways, with both front crosses and rear crosses. What I ended up with was this: We started on the left side, 1/2/3 and into the right side of the number 4 tunnel. I stayed on the left over 5, and into the right side of the #6 tunnel, weaves, with a pivot around to 8, over #9 (on the right), serpentine and a send over 10, rear crossing between 9/10, then another RC between 10/11, and another at 11/12. Front cross between 14/15, and another rear between 17/18. It was a very nice run. We Q'd for MXJ2 leg #3 and 7 MACH points.

This weekend we attended the Mt. Hood Doberman Club AKC trial in Ridgefield, WA. My initial plan was to drive up Saturday morning, but Mr. Weatherman was calling for a possibility of ice on Saturday morning. Plan change meant driving up Friday evening, and checking in early at the La Quinta. What a great dog-friendly hotel! They don't charge a pet fee, don't care how big your dogs are, and our "Executive King Suite" was huge! I would definitely stay there again.

Saturday, November 19th

We arrived bright and early to grab some crate space. Unfortunately it was a small to tall day, so our first run wasn't even until mid-afternoon! I decided to work a class to help out, and they needed a gate due to the person that signed up being late. Boy was working an experience I won't repeat. I normally try to work at most of the clubs we run, I feel like we, as exhibitors, should all help out when we can. All I will say about this experience is: Note to trial secretaries and clubs, if you yell at your workers for doing their job, they will not want to work for you again. There are a few clubs I will not work for due to being berated about working, how the job is done, etc. This is not fair to your workers, they are VOLUNTEERING. There is no incentive to volunteer if you're going to be yelled at. That's all I'm going to say about that.
Excellent B Standard

Our judge for Standard was Beverly Morgan Lewis. I've met her before at trials when she's running her own dogs and always found her to be a pleasant person, but never run under her as a judge. Turns out, her courses were nice, open, and very large dog friendly.

For this course, the plan was to start on the right, over the first two jumps and into the tunnel, over #4 and a swing through the "three sided box" and over 5 (the triple). A pull back to the dogwalk, then a pull to the double (#8), teeter, then a front cross before #10. A hard pull around and into the weaves. Over the A-frame and on to the table. Front cross before the pinwheel (14/15/16/17) and a front cross between 17 and the chute. Then run for the finish.

Worked out very well for us. We ended with a Q and 14 MACH points.

Nancy Davis set this course up. Again lined up on the right, with a fairly straight shot into the tunnel. Front cross between #5 and the weave poles. FC between #8/9, another between #12/13. I intended to do another FC between 13/14, but forgot and ended up doing a rear to swing him around to 15. From there it was a straight shot into the tunnel and then over the final jump.

Another Q and 7 MACH points.
Nice course by Nancy Davis. Our plan was to start on the right, decel cue for the 180 (#3-#4), rear cross between 5/6, over the dogwalk, weaves, then tunnel. Stay to the left of the A-frame with a strong pull 11-12 to avoid the off-course chute. Teeter to table, moving out towards the triple to avoid an off-course, then FC between 17/18 to get the sharp right to the finish (#19).
Plan worked well, another Q and 13 MACH points.
Looked to be a pretty jumpers course, smooth and flowing. When I was planning our course, I noticed that there were several nice places for rear crosses. We'd been having trouble with rear crosses lately, my cruddy timing was causing HP to pull off, earning us a refusal. We'd been working a lot on his "go on" command, so I decided to throw caution to the wind and do mostly rear crosses with this course.

The plan was to line up on the left side, rear cross between 3/4, rear cross between 8/9, front cross after the weaves, then another rear between 15/16. It worked! He was driving ahead well, moving nicely, even when I almost forgot the course at number 6! (You'll notice a slight pause on the video). I was stoked. It earned us a Q and 11 MACH points.
Because I had to work Saturday, I could only enter 1 day of the WAG CPE trial. We left early Sunday morning, at 6am, to drive to Corvallis, OR, about an hour away. We arrived at 7am, grabbed some crate space, and set up for the day.
This weekend's judge was Barrett (Todd) Benson. Never having run under him before, I wasn't sure what to expect. What a nice guy, and super great courses is what we got. :)

Above is the map. We are in level 5, so we needed 25 points (jumps are 1pt, circles 3pts, contacts/weaves 5pts), AND we are required to have 3 jumps, 2 circles, and 1 contact/weave minimum.

Above is my plan for the course. Starting at the tire, into the tunnel, turn back to the A-frame, jump with a wrap back to the A-frame (again), then jump, dog walk, jump, tunnel, jump, tunnel, weaves. We would have enough points if we made it through #9, but it's always good to go for a little extra in Fullhouse. We made it through everything but the weaves, with the buzzer buzzing before we finished them, requiring us to go to the table. No problem though, we met all the requirements and ended up with 31 points and a Q.
Next up was Colors. Rules are that you pick one of two mini/nested courses. I walked both squares and circles, but ended up choosing circles due to the fact that it was smoother and more flowing. Pretty straight forward, with a front cross between 4/5, a rear cross between 5/6, and a front cross between 6/7. We ran it cleanly, ending with a Q and completing our Level 5 Colors requirements.

I was really happy about this course. The plan was lead out for a front cross between 1/2, tight turn into #3 tunnel, around and over the teeter, into the tunnel with a sharp wrap on to the dog walk, over 10/11, with a rear cross between 11/12, and around to the weaves. This is where it all went to pieces. HP popped his weaves twice.....no idea why. He got them on the third try, but we had already NQ'd. :( We finished the course (he ran by the A-frame after a too strong call off, but we circled around and did it again). Darn, we could have used that Standard Q. Oh well.
Last run of the day: Wildcard. Rules are that within the course there are three areas where a choice is offered. In level 5, you have to take two "B" choices, and one "A" choice. My choices for this run were #2 - B, #5 - B, #9 - A. Worked out well, short and sweet run, ending with a Q that fulfills our Level 5 Wildcard requirements and earned us our CL5-H title.
Kennedy and I had decided to carpool for this trial. Thank goodness for roof racks and roof boxes! We would never have otherwise fit all the stuff. Poor Lexi had to stay home this weekend due to still being in heat. Off to Medford with a boxer, a great dane, and 2 poms! We arrived late, around 10:30, and quickly hit the sack to be ready for the next morning.
This weekend we were running under judges we were familiar with, and had been very pleased with their courses before. This weekend was no exception. First up standard.
Nice course by Debbie Wheeler. We started on the left in order to the get line 1-4, nice 180, then back along the length of the ring. Front cross between 8/9, another between 14/15, rear cross at tunnel 18, and this is where I messed us up. I tried to front between 18/19, got in his way, and he missed his weave entry. Bleh, all my fault. NQ for that run, even though HP ran well.
Another nice course. Pinwheel out to a FC between 4/5, another pinwheel, then a rear cross between 9/10 (I was thrilled we got this, he needed a little encouragement to move forward ahead of me but he did it!), then we had a weave problem again. He missed the entry, then began popping again after the first pole. Odd for him, he doesn't usually pop the weaves. We decided to move on and just finish the run, since we already NQ'd. He knocked a bar at 16, we rearcrossed 19/20 and were done.
First area of concern was 2-3, when they are going through a chute, they can't see where they are going and I was concerned that HP would come out of the chute and take the off-course jump right in front of it. To counteract that, I peeled off as soon as he entered the chute, did a landing side front cross on #3, calling his name as soon as I saw his head exit the chute. This worked really well, resulting in a nice turn to #3. The next area of concern was getting the proper end of the tunnel after the teeter. I used a threadle arm, called him, and though he looked at the other end, came in and took the proper side. #10 to the weaves was another area that was getting a lot of dogs, I decided to handle it with a deceleration cue, and calling his name, to get the tight turn. I didn't cue him early enough and he almost took the off-course jump, but we managed to save it. A FC between 11/12 and I thought we were home free. Unfortunately, the person prepping the ring that weekend had dragged it so that the corners were deep, loose dirt. As he took off for jump 16, he slipped a little and knocked a bar. :( Another NQ on an otherwise beautiful run.
I started on the right, then front crossed between #2/3, around the pinwheel, with a rear cross between 6/7 (Yay successful rear cross!!), swing around into the weaves, then a FC after the weaves. I was a little worried about 1415/16, but using a deceleration cue and calling him to me worked really well to get him into #15 tunnel. Rear cross at 18/19 and a Q. MXJ leg #8 and 5 MACH points. Well, at least the weekend wasn't a total bust.

Totals for the weekend 1 Q, and 5 MACH points.

MACH totals: 178/750 points and 4 QQ's, almost 1/4th of the way to our MACH!
Bachelor Kennel Club AKC Agility Trial October 1-2, 2011This weekend was a trip over the Cascades, up to the high desert! We were trialling in Prineville, OR, a venue I'd never been to before. I had gotten everything ready for our weekend the night before, and luckily, we had a very abnormally slow Friday afternoon. My boss was nice and let me leave early, so I got home around 3pm, loaded up, and started my 3 hr drive. It was a gorgeous trip, the high desert does have a strange beauty to it, especially with the contrast of the mountains in the distance.

We arrived at our hotel around 6pm and got settled in. My friend Kennedy and her two dogs arrived around 9:30. I was a bit concerned that our hotel room faced a bar with an outdoor deck and it turns out I was right to be concerned. There was a lot of drinking and shouting all night (and Vegas, Kennedy's dog, had itchy ears which led to lots of shaking), leading us to have a less than stellar sleep night. I think this contributed to our less than stellar showing on Saturday.

Saturday, October 1
New judge, new venue for us. We arrived early (around 6:30) to get some crating space. Crating was tight at this venue, as a result we ended up in an aisle way. I will say though, that the grounds (Crook County Fairgrounds) were gorgeous though, lots of space, nice areas to camp. I do think I'll probably camp next time, as the camping area was nicer than our hotel!

Excellent B Standard
As this was a new judge, we were curious as to what types of courses she would put up. She runs Border Collies, and sometimes Border Collie judges can put up some challenging courses for big dogs.

When I walked this course, I liked it a lot, turns out though, this was not to be a great day for us. We got through the pinwheel opening to the dogwalk with ease, albeit a little slowly. Had to work the dogwalk/tunnel quite a bit (there were some barky dogs in that corner right next to it), luckily the judge was generous to everyone, not calling refusals unless they were blatent. I front crossed before 9, then tried to get one in between 10/11 to avoid the off course table. This is where it all fell apart. I'm not sure if my cross was a little early, or if HP was tired due to the long night of noise, but he knocked the double. This threw me off, so when I tried pulling him from 12 to 13 I didn't pay enough attention and he took the off course number 5. As if things could get any worse, when we arrived at the weaves, there were MORE barking dogs right next to the ring, causing HP to miss his weaves. Bah, what crappy run! NQ. Big time. We both needed to get our game back together.
It looked and walked very nicely. We started with me on the right, around the pinwheel with a front cross between 4/5. He read it well, pulled around 5 nicely, back to 6, and for some reason, knocked a bar on #7. :( He knocked it with his front feet, so I'm not sure if he took off too soon or just didn't have enough lift. He ran like he was really tired all day, so I guess this is just one of those things. On watching a video, I was trying to get a front cross in there, but I think the bar was down before I started my cross. So anyway, FC between 7/8 and another between 9/10. Over the double with a nice weave entry, then we were home free. Another NQ for the day though. :(
We stayed through the end of the day to film Kennedy and Leo (his first AKC trial!) which made for a very long day (he didn't run until 5 or 6), then headed back to the hotel to hopefully get some rest.
Wow, what a course, this one has some tricks to it. I walked it with a tunnel/front cross/dogwalk, then over 3 (while being careful to avoid the off course #8 chute), through another tunnel, then over 5, with a pull to the right to get the teeter/jump/chute. Front cross after the chute to get past that tricky center area and get the 9/table. Around 11/12, really work the weave entry, because it's near the corner with the barking dogs. This is where it got complicated. Kennedy and I walked the portion over and over and over and over. The major choices were:

Front cross after the weaves, over 14, try to get 15 while avoiding the teeter off course, then either front or rear cross between 15/16

Over 14, rear cross, over 15, rear cross, then onward

Try to get in a front cross between 14/15, then a front or rear between 15/16

Actually, the list goes on and on.

My problem was that HP has been having trouble with moving ahead of me (confidence issues?) so our rear crosses of late have been earning us refusals. I still wasn't any closer to deciding. The last conundrum came in the closing sequence. I walked both a front cross between 17/18, and a rear between 18/19.

We came out on course, and I still wasn't 100% sure how I was running. Then HP blasted off the start line. CRAP! Who is this dog? He's moving forward with confidence, he's running fast, WOW. Ok, plan changes to rear crosses, because as we run the course he's getting faster and faster and moving ahead of me really nicely. I feel like I'm back seat driving, running behind him yelling "Go!" and "Turn!". We ended up choosing to do the set of rear crosses at the 14/15/16 and a rear at 18/19. So so so thrilled with my boy, it was one of those runs that just FEELS completely right. We Q'd, with 16 MACH points. It was our second fastest yards-per-second qualifying standard leg ever, and only by 0.05. I also take pride in the fact that this course ate the border collies alive, with somewhere around a 20ish% Q rate. ;)
Rear cross after he enters the tunnel. Call him to get him out of the tunnel in the right direction. Front cross after the weaves then a run for home. All went as planned until jump 6. He came SO close to taking the off course #11, I YELLED his name and he pulled off. My fault for not anticipating the off course (I was more worried about the tunnel beside #8 and completely didn't work the #6/7). We didn't get an off course and were still in the running for a QQ. We finished the course quite nicely, it was fun, and while he wasn't as fast as in the morning, we did get some MACH points out of it. Q and 4 MACH points.
After work on Saturday, the boxers and I jetted up to Portland to run one day at the PAC AKC trial. I spent the night at my friend Kennedy's house so that we would be ready to go Sunday morning.
Excellent B Standard

The judges this weekend were Lori Sage and David Hirsch. I've run under David before, his courses are fun and fair. I've also heard good things about Lori and from this trial, it seems that she's also a great judge.
First up was standard. I debated the opening for this course quite a bit. I couldn't decide where to put in my cross to get the teeter and not the number 16 jump. After walking several options, I started on the left and front crossed between 2 and 3. I was a little late and got in his way a bit but it did work ok. On to the teeter, a couple jumps, and then a front cross before the A-frame. Jump, chute, table, then an odd jump with a wrap back around to the left hand side of a tunnel. Dog walk, jump, weaves (he nailed the entry, and we've had issues with outside weave entries before, so I was happy). The end provided a challenge, but my plan to front cross after the weaves, then a wrap (front cross) after 17 worked well. We Q'd for our #10 MX leg, giving us our MX title and 10 MACH points.

I walked this course and the only place I was worried about was the opening. After trying a few different combos, I decided to start on the left, and front cross between 2/3. In hindsight, I should have tried a rear between 2/3 as my front was slightly early and caused a knocked bar. :(. NQ on this run, but the rest of it was very pretty. Over 3/4, front cross between 5/6, another between 9/10. I had a bobble when I forgot my front cross after the weaves. I tried sending him over 14 but I was late on the cue and earned us a refusal as well. No QQ for us today. Bleh. :( Sorry, no video for this run.

Nice thing about local trials? Arriving late. :) We didn't get to the trial site until almost 7:30am, for us that's late! We did arrive in time for the briefing though, and had a pleasant surprise. HP took High in Trial Working Group for Saturday! Yay for giant ribbons!

Another nice course. Things went well for the most part. Through the tire and on to the dogwalk easily, then a turn tunnel command. I had to sprint to the front of that tunnel, so I could get HP's attention before the weaves. Lots of dogs were blasting out of the tunnel and overshooting the weaves. He came out, sighted in on me, and I gave him the "Weave!" command. Beautiful. Over 5/6/7 and in to the tunnel. Nailed the teeter, then the table. Next was the most complicated section. 11/12/13 was set up as sort of a serpentine. I decided to work it on the left side, sent him over 11, pulled him back over 12 with a threadle, then sent him over 13 and rear crossed. Then comes that sucky NQ that I caused. I was a little behind due to the rear cross, sent him over 14, and then had a brainless moment. I sent him over #5, earning us an off course. Poor guy, he did EXACTLY what I asked of him. It was completely my fault. Oh well, we just continued on and finished the course. It was a gorgeous run, and our only NQ of the weekend. I swear my dog needs a new handler sometimes. :)

This course looked like it would be a blast, lots of running, very motivational and fun for the dogs. We ran it as: over #1, then a 180 over 2/3 with a landing side front cross in front of #3, 4/5/6, front cross between 6/7, and then run like crazy for the end. The only tricky part left was the deceleration cue at jump #18 so that he could nail his weave entry and not overshoot it. Another Q for the weekend, 8 MACH points and MXJ leg #6.
I haven't updated anything since June! Admittedly, HP and I usually take it easy during the July/August months due to the heat, we only did one trial (CPE only) during July and one CPE trial in August. Work has gotten crazy busy lately, usually leaving me pretty exhausted by the time I get home in the evenings. When you're tired, blogging takes a back seat. So anyway, on to this weekend's trial.

MCDF trial, day 1

Luckily, I was able to drop by on Thursday and set up crating space for myself and Kennedy. This meant that we didn't have to arrive super-early on Saturday. Showed up at 6:50 and the gates were still locked. Odd, but they got them unlocked rather quickly. I got HP and Lexi set up, then worked the FAST classes, since we weren't running FAST. I was hoping things would move along really quickly, as we had a record heat advisory in the valley, and HP does NOT do hot weather.
Fun course. A few tricky areas, but overall looks to be a good course. My plan for this course was to start on the left side of the chute, stay on that side through the teeter (#4), do a turn command from 4 to 5, pick him up and hit the weaves (which he nailed), on the left for weaves and 7/8/9, front cross between 9-10, on the right for 11-12-13, because of the several nice off-course options to the table, I used a threadle move to pull him into me and send him to the table, sent him into the tunnel and handled 16-20 on the right and a little ahead of him. He was completely on, did an awesome job, and we picked up a Q. Gave us MX leg #9, and 12 MACH points.
Plan for this one was pretty straightforward. Running start, handle 2-3 as a 180, with a landing side front cross, straight up 4-5-6-7 to the weaves at 8, over 9, handle 10-11 as a 180 with another landing side front cross, then 12-13, with a front cross between 13-14 (which I was late on, but we've been having issues with his rear crosses when it's hot, he stops and looks at me like I'm stupid), over 15-16-17 then a wrap to jump #18. Fun, fun, fun jumpers course. We Q'd, giving us MXJ leg #5, and 4 MACH points.
The only excuse I can come up with is that summer is our busy time at work and I've been exhausted most nights by the time I get home. I know, I know, not an excuse, so I guess I can just say Sorry!

So on June 26th, we went to Cottage Grove, OR for 2 coursing ability tests (CAT). Both dogs were signed up for both runs, and if we got these Lexi and Harry Potter would have their CAT titles. We arrived early, set up Camp Harry Potter (and Lexi) and got things going. It was a gorgeous day, some clouds, low 70's. Nice day for lure coursing.

First runs for both dogs were successful, even though Lexi had a minor hiccup.

She got distracted by the cone that marked the pulley. I think she thought it was the bag. Because she picked the lure back up she was still able to pass.

Harry Potter, on the other hand, had a fabulous run and enjoyed himself thoroughly.

Both qualified for their second CAT legs.

After an awesome potluck, we had a shot at our third CAT legs for each dog. This time they flip flopped with Lexi having an AWESOME run, and Harry Potter getting distracted (by horse poop of all things).

Videos to come soon.

Both boxers qualified, giving each of them their CAT titles.
CRAC usually has their trials at the Linn County Fairgrounds, a venue I love. I was really concerned when they said they were changing venues for this trial to the Oregon State Fairgrounds. They said that crating would be outdoors and it was a semi-enclosed arena. I was concerned about the outdoor crating, as well as the semi-enclosed arena. Harry Potter does not run well in heat, and I was concerned about keeping him cool. I did go out and purchase a shade tent, and luckily when we got there on Friday, a nice woman let me borrow the shade cloths she wasn't using. We arrived bright and early (6:30 am!) and set up camp Harry Potter.
We had a lot of time before the first run because it was small to tall. I let the dogs work out their crazy in a fenced area next to the crating space with our friends Kennedy, Vegas, and Leo. After that, we spent the morning reading, relaxing, and just hanging out. Naps outdoors in the shade are heavenly!
Judge Lavonda Herring had nice courses all weekend. At the start I sent him into the tunnel, then it was a run toward the second tunnel (#4). He hit the correct side of the tunnel, and I picked him up as he came out, we went over the double and I gave him the weave command (we handled the weaves from the left side). Unfortunately he hit the second pole instead of the first and we NQ'd. We finished the run with a front cross between the weaves and #7, a rear cross at the A-frame, a front cross between #14 and #15, and another before the teeter. All in all a nice run except for the darn weaves.

We did a front cross between #2 and #3, then again between #3 and #4. Another front cross between #6 and #7, then we had a dropped bar at #9. From watching the video, it looks like my timing was off. I called his name as he was going over the jump, causing him to drop his feet and knock a bar. I should have just trusted that he would get the correct end of the tunnel #10. We used a turn command coupled with a rear cross between #13/14, then he nailed his weaves and the last jump. Another NQ, but it was handler error. :P

This jumpers course had the same weave entry as the Standard course, so I guess I took for granted that he'd get the entry. Wrong. My guess is he had more speed with this one, causing him to land farther out after jump #5, I didn't work the entry enough and he hit pole #2 for the second time this weekend. NQ. :( Then he knocked jump #7 (second time this weekend that he knocked a jump before a tunnel, maybe he's focusing on the tunnel too much and not working the jump?). We did a FC between 10/11, and another between 15/16. Another NQ for the weekend.

So our totals for the weekend were 1Q out of 4. Currently we're scheduled for two months off from AKC agility. There aren't that many trials around here in July/August, and it's hot anyway, so HP doesn't run his best. We do have a few CPE trials but they tend to be lots of fun with a high Q rate. The time off I think is a good thing, I can see a few training issues popping up in the last trial that we need to work on. I've started retraining weaves with the 2x2 method, so hopefully that should help, and I think I'm going to schedule a private or two to see if I can work on increasing his speed, which should increase our MACH points.

We drove up on Friday, staying at my friend Kennedy's house. We were up early Saturday to get crate space as well as it was a Tall to Small day for us. First up was Standard.

Excellent B Standard, Saturday

When I picked up the map, I was pretty pleased. It seemed like a nice, flowing, straightforward course.

Unfortunately it didn't go as planned. It was a fast opening with a nice straight line through obstacles 1-2-3. HP was moving well, we were doing great. I pulled him around 4-5 and sent him on to the teeter, then front-crossed before the weaves. Awesome weaves, he had a great entry, then hopped up on to the table. For some reason, he took off too early for jump 9 and knocked a bar. I was off myself after that, sent him into the #12 tunnel and got way too far ahead of him for his dogwalk, didn't cue it properly, and he took an off-course jump (#17/11) instead. We finished strongly with no other problems, but obviously an NQ. :(

The good parts of the run:

He was fast, happy, and running well, even though it was warm-ish.

He hit a difficult weave entry that I was worried about.

We got in a lovely front cross at the teeter.

We didn't go splat at the #19 chute to #20 jump, which with the way things were angled, was a distinct possibility!

I think the video is in slow-motion (accidentally) but you get the idea.

We were done early and headed for Kennedy's house to watch True Grit and eat Chinese food. :) Because I'm a morning person, I was up early on Sunday and headed out. We had plenty of time to sit around, so I took the dogs for a walk around Clark County Fairgrounds. Many of the "parking fields" had been mowed, but no one was around, so I let the boxers loose to play. It was cool, and early, they had lots of fun. It also gave us a chance to practice Lexi's recalls. I'd let her run around for a while, then call her in, play tug, and send her back out to run. We had fun, with her charging in to tug, then running back out to attack Harry Potter. :)

We got back from our walk and picked up our maps for the day.

Excellent B Standard, Sunday

Again, another nice course. I thought for sure we'd Q in this one.

We were doing great, had good speed, nailed the weaves, handled the complex 8-9-10 sequence did a rear cross between 12/13 came around the loop and that's where the trouble was. I ad seen several dogs take the number 18 jump then off-course at the a-frame. In an effort to avoid that, we jumped #18, then I called him and pulled him right off the #19 triple, earning us a refusal. :( Oh well, it was still a pretty run despite the NQ.

Excellent B Jumpers with weaves, Sunday

This one was the challenge of the weekend. This course looked HARD from the get go. Very jerky, and extremely difficult.

My plan for this was starting on the inside, with a front cross between 3-4, a rear cross with a turn command between 4-5, around the pinwheel, then a rear cross between 8-9 to get the correct tunnel entry, then a fairly simple run for the finish. Our problem was the weaves, half way through, something squeeked/squawked outside the ring (bird, toy, I'm not sure what), and he popped out towards the distraction. Very disappointing after we nailed the complicated part of the course. We finished, and even though we had NQ'd, stuck around for times. The thing was, this course was complex, but SHORT, which led to a LOT of people NQ'ing simply because they were over time, even with no other faults. It was really disappointing for a lot of people.

No video of this run available, it was the end of the weekend and very hard to find anyone left to record.

Total for the weekend:

After searching, the option I came up with was Sweet Creek Falls, near Mapleton, OR.

I really like the local hikes website as a resource for some neat, otherwise undiscovered hikes in the area.

I took Lexi and Harry Potter, Dan brought Bob (his Bernese). Please note that all images used on today's blog are copyright Dan Cornford. It's hard to handle a camera and two crazy boxers so he was designated as today's photographer.

Here we are at the trailhead, pre-hike.
It turned out to be a lovely day, and a beautiful hike. There were dozens of waterfalls and it was a very easy trail, about 3.5 miles total. It was fairly level hiking with lots of bridges and a well maintained trail. We arrived early morning around 10am, and really didn't meet many other hikers till we were leaving around noon. I'd recommend going early, as it was getting crowded as we were leaving. I would say, if you're taking your dogs, be sure they are:

Ok walking on grating. Many of the bridges had metal (see through) grating to walk on. Luckily my dogs didn't seem to mind.

Ok with other dogs. There are narrow parts of the trail where you must pass other dogs/people.

Leashed at all times. This is not a good "off lead" trail, it is narrow in spots, and I'd worry about exhuberant dogs tumbling into the creek and not being able to get back up to the trail.

The following are some pictures of the trail and the dogs. :)
It's the last day of the EKC Memorial Day 4-day trial. We loaded up early again, and I worked Novice and Open FAST early to get my working obligations out of the way. Picked up the maps and was totally stoked for the courses. The judges seemed to realize that by day four neither the handlers or the dogs would be 100% so the courses looked pretty straight-forward. Standard was up first again.
On walking this course, there were a few handling choices to make. After walking both a front and a rear between the teeter and #3 I chose a front cross. We went with another front cross after the A-frame before #6. Jump #9 (triple) landed them looking right up the A-frame, so to avoid that I threadled and gave HP his weave command. He pulled into me nicely and did his weaves well. People were walking the serpentine (11-12-13) in a variety of ways, I chose to handle it from the front side, sending him over 11, threadling back over 12, then sending him over 13 with a rear cross right behind him (between 12 and 13 jumps). The rest was smooth and easy, with a front cross after the tunnel(#18) and on to the finish. We Q'd for our 7th MX leg and 16 MACH points!
Walked this and thought we might actually have a chance at a QQ today. So my plan was: Front cross (FC) between 2-3, another between 5-6, another between 9-10, then run for the end. I had seen lots of dogs take the off course #2 jump on the run to the finish, between 16-17 so I knew I had to work that hard. We were doing great, and on plan until 9-10, for some reason, after the FC HP turned toward the 15 jump. I screamed his name, he turned and took 10, and we were still in it. On the run to the finish (15-16-17-18) he did look at #2, but I called him and he focused back in and finished strong. We Q'd for another QQ! Woot! MXJ leg #3 and 4 MACH points!
I am just beaming, astounded, astonished, and so very proud of my boy. Talk about an amazing weekend. Three MX legs, three MXJ legs, two QQ's, and a HIT working group all in one trial. How spectacularly awesome.

I think I'll give HP a break and skip practice tomorrow, he deserves it after how hard he worked this weekend.
We had problems from the get-go with this one. HP didn't hold his start stay. He crept foward, had to pogo-jump over the #1 jump, didn't get enough speed and lift for the triple (#2), knocking a bar on the triple. After that it was a beautiful run. He handled the serpentine 4-5-6 great, his weaves were awesome, we front crossed between the weaves and #9, the rest was smooth sailing. Lots of dogs took the off-course jump #1 after the dog-walk, but he pulled back into me easily. I was pleased with the run, even with the knocked bar. The only disappointing thing was he was MOVING, and would have gotten 20 MACH points if we'd Q'd. :( Oh well!
I have to admit I was really worried about this one. The 20 inch crowd that had run it before us were complaining that it was difficult, and very unlike Paula's normal courses. We walked it, I didn't think it was THAT bad, and figured we'd just see how it went. HP held his stay this time, and we threadled jump 2-3 so as to avoid the off-course #8 option. He nailed his weaves, we front crossed to jump 7, then another front cross (FC) between #9 and #10. FC's between 12-13, 14-15, and 16-17. Whew! Lots of front crosses! Then a straight sprint to the tunnel and the last jump. We Q'd! Yay! MXJ leg #2 and 7 MACH points!

Unfortunately the batteries died in my video camera for this run so no video available. :(
We arrived early as usual. I got the dogs settled, maps collected, and set down to study maps. They were doing general briefing, as well as High in Group awards. I was sitting at my crate set-up only half listening. Suddenly my friend Beth comes over and says, "Why are you sitting here? You have a ribbon!" When I walked over, it turns out we had taken High in Working Group yesterday! Wow! Awesome! Funny enough, our only other HIT Group was last year at this same show. We got an awesome ribbon for it.
Needless to say I'm thrilled, and it was totally unexpected.

Excellent B Standard
After waiting around through FAST. We were up for Standard.

This course was nice and flowing, with a few challenges. When walking this course, there were only a few places where I considered a couple options. The front cross after the 180 and before the teeter was a no brainer. Between the A-frame and the chute I walked it with both a front cross after the A-frame or a rear cross before the chute. In the end a front cross won out, as I don't like rear crossing the chute. The dogs don't know where you are when they come out, and unlike a tunnel, if you call them while they are in the chute they can get tangled. The other area where there were options was the 14-15-16 sequence. I walked it with both a front cross between 14-15 and a front cross between 15-tunnel. We ended up doing the front cross between 14-15 and it worked well for us, I think the other option would have been fine as well. Either way, we had an awesome run! We Q'd, giving us our 6th MX leg and 17 MACH points.

Excellent B Jumpers with Weaves
I was pretty stoked after our Standard run, and we only had to wait an hour and a half to run Jumpers. I was REALLY hoping to break our Jumpers curse.

This course was pretty complex. I walked it with a front cross between 2-3, another between 6-7, another between 9-10. My areas of concern were 13-14, where the tunnel was a definite off-course option, 15-16 because outside weave entries are NOT HP's favorite, and 19-20 where again the tunnel is an off course option. I chose to threadle 13-14, as well as 19-20 to really pull HP in and get his focus on me so he wouldn't take the tunnel. For the weaves challenge, I allowed HP to run out straight towards the wall until his body was in line with the weaves, then pull him in and tell him to weave so that he wouldn't miss his entry. I watched several dogs before us get a lot of off course tunnel suck, so I was worried. Turns out I didn't need to be. WE ACTUALLY Q'd!!!!! He ran great, was totally focused, read my crosses and threadles really well. We got our first MXJ leg and 5 MACH points. Yay!!!!! After our run, my former instructor (we changed due to a move) stopped me to tell me what a great job I'd done handling the course. Since she is not the type to be over-effusive with praise, I was thrilled!

Video of our run:

So we now have our first QQ, and added 22 MACH points to our total today! AND a HIT working group!!!! Woot woot!

By the end of the day I had two very tired boxers. :)

This weekend is our 4-day Memorial Day weekend local trial put on by Eugene Kennel Club at the Lane County Fairgrounds. Love, love, love this venue. I went over early on Thursday (since it's only 15 minutes from my house) and set up our mat and crates so we would have premium space. Judges this weekend are Bob Long and Paula Ratoza.

We arrived early, about 7:30am. I took the dogs for a nice long walk because FAST was running first and we weren't entered in FAST. We have our Open FAST title, but HP's strength is not really distance work, and I'm focusing most of my training Standard and JWW in order to get our MACH.

I walked Lexi around for a while, so she could play with some of the puppies in attendance. We also ran into another boxer person! She had a 9 yr old that was running preferred. She thought Lexi and HP were just GORGEOUS. I'm a little biased, but of course I agree.

Standard ExB
So after picking up course maps and getting everyone settled, I sat down to see what we were in for.

Nice course. We headed over to wait for our run. While waiting, I saw a guy videoing for the local news. He started talking to me, then asked if I'd wear a microphone while I ran. I was a bit flustered, but said yes. Turns out it wasn't a problem, I forgot about it once we started running. I set HP up in a startline stay, led out to Jump #2. On the ok, he released. The first surprise was the A-frame. At the end of the A-frame I released him, and before I could head for jump #4, he headed for the chute! I yelled his name and he stopped inches from going into the chute and came back to me. Luckily, no fault so we continued on. The rest of the course was fairly smooth. We did a front cross between the weaves and jump #9, a rear cross between jump #11 and the tunnel, and one more rear cross between jumps 16 and 17. Harry Potter did a great job, we got another MX leg (#5), 4th place, and 10 MACH points. At the end of the run, the news guy came up and wanted a quick interview. Of course right after my run I looked awful but oh well. :)
Jumpers with Weaves ExB
The jumpers course actually looked pretty challenging for the first half.

It was basically a figure 8 to start. I walked this a couple ways. The first one was with a front cross between #6 and #7, the second way was with a rear cross between #7 and #8. I really wanted to get the front cross in if I could, as it made the pinwheel (7-8-9) much smoother. Turns out it worked and I was able to get it in. We also front crossed between 9 and 10. At this point I was thrilled, HP was handling well, we were done with the difficult part of the course, all that was left was weaves and a quick run around the edge of the ring.

Well, it all fell apart. For some reason, HP popped at his #10 pole in the weaves. I have watched and watched the video, looking to see if I anticipated the end of the weaves, if there was any lateral movement on my part that pulled him out, but I can't find a thing. I guess I have to chalk it up to one of those things. After he popped, we were going to re-do the weaves (even though it was an NQ at that point). I called him back to the beginning and he began BACKWEAVING! ACK! I tried calling him out twice, but he was ignoring me. In an effort to get him to stop, even though I knew it would mean a whistle, I stepped across his path. He did stop and come to me, the judge blew the whistle, and we left the ring. As much as it was frustrating that he popped the weaves and it down-spiraled from there, he did do a FABULOUS job on the first and most difficult part of the course. I guess we have to take the good parts where we can get them.

Video of our JWW run (even though it's embarassing):
We still have 3 days left, so that's 3 more chances for those elusive MXJ legs and QQ's!

MACH totals: 48/750 points and 0 double Q'sRachel Tennant, DVM, MShttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06646235629442480095noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9192809934289782128.post-90605731991724113952011-05-22T09:23:00.000-07:002011-05-23T07:09:19.879-07:00First CAT legs for both Boxers! While I'm a little behind on my agility updates, I do have some great news from yesterday. Both boxers picked up a Coursing Aptitude Test (CAT) leg yesterday. My local all-breed club consists of a LOT of sighthound owners. As a result, they do a lot of lure coursing trials. Yesterday afternoon (Saturday), they held their first CAT. It was limited to 25 dogs, and run at the end of the first day of their lure coursing trial. The premium suggested we show up at 2, I got there a little before noon because I'd planned to help out if needed.

Well, when I arrived, I could tell things were running late. They had an unusually large number of entries for the regular trial, so the CAT wasn't going to start until much later. Thank goodness it was a breezy, 58 degree, overcast day, so I could crate the boxers comfortably in the car. We sat around and chatted with friends for a while, and watched some dogs run. A friend that graduated vet school a year ahead of me (Roberta) was running her Ridgeback at the trial. Saucy (the ridgeback) was out running, somehow managed to "cheat" and jump across some brush, as well as catch herself on the line. Lure coursing can be a dangerous sport. When she finished her run, Roberta noticed Saucy had a laceration running vertically about 3-4 inches along her chest. Neither of us had the materials to stitch up a laceration that big, so I told Roberta I had my vet clinic keys with me, and my clinic was 20 minutes down the road so we could go stitch her up there. I knew I was risking missing my CAT runs with the boxers, but Roberta would do the same for me if my dog needed stitches. We hauled butt down to the clinic, local blocked the area with lidocaine, then cleaned and stitched it up. We made it back to the trial just in time for our runs. Obviously poor Saucy is out of the trial for the weekend but at least we got it cleaned up and stitched up.

So after passing our lameness check (you have to gait the dog in front of two officials to make sure they are fit to run), we were set to course! The boxers have been to practices before, Harry Potter has done a lot of practice coursing, but Lexi has only been to one. Practices only consist of 100-150 yard straight courses. The CAT was a 300 yard oval course for small dogs under 12 inches and brachycephalic breeds, all other dogs run 600 yrds. I figured Harry Potter would do it, but I did wonder about Lexi. Turns out I didn't have to worry. She took off like a shot, chasing the bag with determination.

You see in the video that she almost caught the bag several times, the people watching were yelling at the guy running the lure to go faster. :) I am quite sure he didn't expect such speed out of a boxer! She ran the 300 yards in 30 seconds. As she came around towards the end where I could catch her, I could hear her squealing at the lure. Talk about an excited, happy boxer! We passed, and she qualified for her first CAT leg. For our title we need 2 more legs, which we hope to get in June.

Harry Potter was up next, but I had no worries about him. He's always been excited about lure coursing, to the point of screaming and lunging when the machine starts up. He ran really well, was nice and tight with good follow.

He finished the 300 yrs in 27 seconds to get his first qualifying CAT leg. Hopefully he will finish his CAT title in June as well.
It was an awesomely fun day, spent with some great dog friends, and I can't wait to do it again in June!Rachel Tennant, DVM, MShttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06646235629442480095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9192809934289782128.post-51826636437636852802011-05-15T09:10:00.000-07:002011-05-15T09:10:01.457-07:00Wow have I been ignoring my blog....Sorry for the lateness in posting training updates. I've been procrastinating quite a bit. Probably due to the training issue we've been having lately, and the fact that I've worked 6 days a week for the past 3 weeks. Very exhausting schedule. So I'll fess up, stop procrastinating, and update my blog.

Harry Potter
So this has been my frustration. I've talked about his grass eating issues before, but it seems like they'd been getting worse rather than better. I was getting really frustrated, and admittedly pissed, that he'd rather eat grass than run agility. Classes were becoming no fun for me, or for HP. So my instructor took me aside after class and told me I had a choice. I could be pissed and get nowhere, or I could sit down, come up with a plan, and take this whole thing as a challenge that I have to work through. After thinking about it, I decided she was right. So after some thought, I came up with a couple things:

Find something REALLY rewarding. HP had already shown me that he'd rather eat grass than have treats and rather eat grass than play tug so I had to come up with something SUPER motivating that could help his focus.

Reward more often when we're working on grass. HP has trained on dirt in an arena his whole life. He's 5 now and we're just starting to train regularly on grass. So I need to remember this is hard for him and that I need to up my rewards to help him keep his focus.

So, I started the toy hunt. I ordered a babble ball as well as a Crunch-n-tug. My thinking was that he has before shown a complete OCD attitude to the babble ball, to the point of me having to take it away. It is a small ball that talks when you bump it or move it. He ADORES it. We also had a crunch-n-tug that a friend bought us that he liked a lot that got stolen at a show. I highly recommend the crunch-n-tug for anyone who has an agility dog. She makes them specifically for your dog, you pick the type of fur, squeeker, it has a pocket for a water bottle to crunch and she'll even put a bungee on the handle for tugging. Awesome toy!

Well, we tried the babble ball in practice last week. I was worried that it would be TOO exciting for him, causing him to knock jumps or bail on equipment. I'm glad to say that after a run or two, he honed in and worked WONDERFULLY for the babble ball. We could actually do sequences without any grass eating! I was thrilled to find SOMETHING that worked, as well as pretty proud of myself to have worked it out. Honestly, I don't even remember what we practiced as far as sequences go, I just remember that we were successful, and after the many weeks of grass eating, I was stoked.

We have a "focus session" today working on contacts and weaves for the upcoming 4-day Memorial Day weekend trial here in town. I've asked our instructor to do some serious distractions while weaving, as well as work on rear crosses into weaves. I've needed a few of those at the past few trials, and I just don't trust them enough to chance them during a run. I'll try to put up a report when we get home today.

Lexi
Lexi's class this week was a great one. Kathy worked hard, there were several stations set up for us to work on.

Jump chute - consists of 5 jumps in a straight line, 5-6 feet apart, with bars at 8 inches. The idea is to get your dog striding correctly over the jumps, and to drive forward in front of you. You set a target plate at one end, then take your dog to the other end. They are supposed to drive over the line of jumps. At first you should stand still after you release them and they should drive to the target, then gradually add in forward motion as they become more comfortable (in order of walk-jog-run, working both sides). Jump height is not important, and they are supposed to be really low for this exercise. If the dog has trouble driving over 5 jumps (Lexi cheated, jumped the first and ran out around to get the food) you can place the dog in the middle with two or three jumps and work up to 5.

Lateral distance - Jump set up with three cones directly in line on each side of the jump, with approximately 2 feet between each cone:

X X X |-----------| X X X

The idea is to set the dog up with the jump directly in front of them, you walk out to the cone, stand slightly forward of the jump and cue the dog to take the jump. The dog should take the jump, then come into you. You slowly work from the inner cones to the outer cones, increasing distance and adding difficulty. Ideally, you should have 30 feet of lateral distance eventually, but as these were baby dogs, we were only working to about 12 feet max.

Angled jumping - Jump set up with three cones angled away from each side of the jump, with approximately 2 feet between each cone:

X X
X X
X X
|------------|

You set the dog up at each cone, move around the jump so you are slightly ahead of the jump and directly in line with the dog and call the dog to you (for example if I have the dog set up on the cone on the right side of the jump, I walk up in front of and on the left side of the jump and call him to me). You gradually move farther and farther out to get the dog used to jumping at an angle to the jump, rather than always just straight on.

Teeter - teeter was set up with tables under each end so the dogs could work on it at approximately half height

Dog walk - set up to practice contacts (2 on 2 off)

It was a great class, by the end Lexi was VERY mentally tired. A lot of the other dogs were physically tired, at which point Kathy took a small break to talk to us about conditioning, how important it is, and how most people don't do enough of it. My boxers rarely get tired, and I try to do as much conditioning as possible to help prevent injury. But that's a topic for another blog.Rachel Tennant, DVM, MShttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06646235629442480095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9192809934289782128.post-85488795423547949622011-04-24T21:54:00.000-07:002011-04-26T11:28:10.075-07:00What an awesome trial weekend....This weekend was the German Shepherd Dog Club of Oregon/Portland Agility Club trial. It takes place in Ridgefield, Washington. Nice venue, indoors, with lots of crating space. We arrived Friday night at my friend Kennedy's house around 9pm, she's nice enough to let me crash on her couch when we have Portland area trials. Lexi and Vegas (Kennedy's Great Dane) had the most awesome time chasing each other around the back yard, I wish I'd had a video camera. We crashed out around 10:30, as 5:30 am comes VERY early on Saturdays!

Up at 5:30am, arrived at the trial at 6:30am. Set up the soft crates and began the wait. The run order was totally screwed up, and we ended up doing our ExB Standard run at 10am and our ExA Jumpers run at 4:30pm. Made for a VERY long day. HP is very chill at trials and Lexi is getting much better about relaxing in her crate.
The first thing we heard when we got there was how difficult the courses were on Friday. :( After this weekend, I can say these judges were tough, and you could tell they don't run big dogs. The courses were very challenging, and some didn't have great flow. Oh well, it happens sometimes.
On walking this course, I noticed a few spots where things could go bad. First double jump #4 to tunnel #5. I was on the inside (right) of the teeter and needed to cue the outside tunnel entry. Luckily momentum carried him into that entry fairly easily. The next tricky spot was jump #8 to the #9 triple to the #10 table. I decided to use a deceleration cue (slowing down) and NOT crossing the plane of the #9 to avoid him taking the #11 jump, then I used a lateral to pull him to the table. He read this well, it worked great. Lots of dogs either took the #11 (bypassing the table) or knocked the #9 triple due to too much of a decel cue. The last tricky spot on course was #15 A-frame to #16 weaves. This one wasn't expected, but lots of dogs took the #18 or #19 jumps after the A-frame instead of pulling into the weaves. We almost had that problem. HP ran through his contact and started towards #19 when I yelled his name and front-crossed to get him into the weaves.
We Q'd for our MX Leg #3 (of 10 needed) and 11 MACH points

It was a beautiful day in the northwest, 60's and sunny, so since we had so much down-time, I walked the dogs up to the top of the hill where they romped across the fields in the sun. Lexi also had some fabulous play time with a doberman and with a little spitz-type dog. She's becoming a trial pro. :)
For this course, we were still chasing that elusive last AXJ leg for our AXJ title. The first challenge was the 4-5-6 pinwheel, the off-course jump after 5 got several dogs. The 8-9-10-11 also got a lot of dogs. Because of the distance 7 to 8, many dogs either were either pulled off or pushed off the 8 jump. There were also lots of opportunities for getting the wrong ends of both tunnels. Because it had warmed up quite a bit, HP was not running his fastest. While it slowed up our time a bit, it did make handing this tough course easier.
Since we'd achieved my big goal for the weekend (AXJ title), today was just icing on the cake. This course presented several opportunities for off courses. Our trouble came at the 6-7-8 sequence. I walked it with a front cross between 6 and 7, a rear cross between 7 and the weaves, and a rear cross between the weaves and 9. The problems with each were as followes:

Front cross between 6 and 7 - sets you up for an off course jump #11

Rear cross between 7 and the weaves - HP's rear crosses into weaves are not that strong. Unless he's really driving through the weaves he will get distracted by me crossing behind him and pop out.

Rear cross after the weaves before jump 9 - puts you WAY behind your dog for the 9-10-11-12-tunnel sequence, which a lot of dogs were having trouble with, the 11 jump was angled wonky and forced people to push their dogs back out to jump 12, several dogs missed the 12 jump because of this

So in hindsight, I should have done the rear cross before the weaves. Instead we tried a front cross between 6 and 7, I *think* I was probably late, and we got the off course jump at #11. HP knew when I called him we'd gotten the wrong one, he came up and kissed my nose, I told him it was ok and we finished the run. Otherwise our run was fast and gorgeous, my inept handling messed him up, so we celebrated anyway. :)
This one was another tough course with lots of challenges. The first was the #5 tunnel to a 180 at #6-#7 with a wrap to the #8 tunnel. I saw several people walking it with a front cross between #6 and #7 and a pull around to #8. That worked well for us, he got it easily, which lead us into a nice rear at #9 and a smooth weave pole entry. The front cross between #12 (double) and #13 (teeter) was a little rough, as HP had sighted in on the tire but pulled off it (as he should have) when I called him. The #14 to #15 tire was also a challenge as there was about 1 stride between landing the #14 jump and the off-course jump in front of it. I saw HP sight in on the off-course jump and I SCREAMED his name, he pulled around and took the tire! Yay! The rest of the course was fairly smooth.
We Q'd for MX leg #4 and 14 MACH points!

All in all it was a fabulous weekend with an AXJ title, a double Q on Saturday (didn't count towards our MACH because one leg was in ExA and one was in ExB), 2 MX legs, and 25 MACH points.

MACH totals: 38/750 points and 0 double Q's (but it's a start!)Rachel Tennant, DVM, MShttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06646235629442480095noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9192809934289782128.post-22733878561333454042011-04-21T21:28:00.000-07:002011-04-21T21:28:13.340-07:00Weekly agility classesTuesday night with Harry Potter was another session on grass. We were working discriminations (ie use your Threadle arm!). Per the website AgilityNerd, a threadle is:

"Threadle describes the dog's path through two or more obstacles when the dog performs obstacles in the sequence in the same direction. The dog is "pulled through" (between) adjacent obstacles in order to take the next obstacle in the same direction as the previous obstacle. The entrance and exit paths may or may not wrap the respective jumps.
The obstacles are often jumps and are also often arranged in an almost straight line. Although the spacing, rotation, and arrangement of the obstacles can vary significantly. The key feature is the dog's taking the sequence of obstacles in the same direction. As best I can tell the name of the sequence refers to the way the dog's path looks as though it is "sewn" or "threaded" through the plane of the obstacles."

Two Jump and Three Jump Threadles

Thanks to AgilityNerd for the definition and illustration.

We had a course set up that had a row of 4 jumps with a right angle into the weaves, then two jumps to an A-frame tunnel discrimination. After the jump you use your body language to cue the dog to come in to you, then send them to the tunnel because it was closest. The first pass was rough, with some grass eating, and then he picked the A-frame instead of the tunnel that I had cued. I have a suspicion that I was late cuing the tunnel though, as I was trying to manage his grass eating. Our instructor says that we need to reward the dog coming in for the threadle cue 70% of the time, as threadles are difficult for the dog. So we restarted and he managed to get the threadle cue, then tunnel cue.

We also worked on a sequence that required the dog to drive over then wrap around the jump to come back with the handler for the next jump. I was worried about backjumping (where the dog goes over a jump then turns around and jumps back over it), which is a big no-no in agility. HP actually had more trouble with eating the grass than the backjumping. It seems like as long as I am working hard and focused on him he can ignore the grass. However, the minute I pause to think through something or restart a sequence, he resorts to grass eating. I guess we'll just have to continue with out clicker/reward training on grass. Kathy gave me homework, working on collar grabs, so that when I have to grab him when he's eating grass he doesn't see it as a punishment, he sees it as an amp up to work.

Lexi's Thursday night class

Wow, just....wow. What an AWESOME class we had tonight. Lexi was a ROCKSTAR. Our first set up was a tunnel-jump-jump, front cross, jump-jump-tunnel. Running start, no sit stays, just amped up running. Lexi LOVED it. She was driving ahead, I just had to try to get the commands out fast enough. When she does get ahead or off course, she's whipping around back to me when I call her. It was AWESOME. We did our first full height dogwalk tonight as well. She had very little trouble (after the first bail off) with it, and by the end of class was driving forward quite well, and even doing 2on2off (they are supposed to land with their hind legs on the board, front legs off) at the end. We did some teeter work, with a little more bang than last week, and then took a look at their striding over the A-frame, which was fabulous. Again, awesome 2on2off on the A-frame! What a GREAT class!
